Ford Escape Towing Capacity and Powertrain Specs

2020 Ford Escape Towing

When you’re looking to tow upwards of 3,500 pounds, then you need to make sure you’re equipped with the right powertrain. With the Ford Escape, you’ll have two different gas-powered engines to choose from, based on your expected hauling needs:

Standard 1.5L EcoBoost® Engine

Available 2.0L EcoBoost® Engine

Horsepower

181 horsepower

250 horsepower

Torque

190 lb-ft

280 lb-ft

Towing Capacity when properly equipped

2,000 pounds

3,500 pounds

Both powertrains feature turbocharged engines that give your drives an exciting kick. However, if you really want to max out your Ford Escape towing capacity, you’ll want to go for the available 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4 engine. This is available on the SEL and Titanium trim levels.

You will also need to make sure you have the available Class II Trailer Tow Package. This includes a Class II hitch receiver that allows you to sturdily attach your trailer to your Escape.

Drivetrain and Towing

2020 Ford Escape Engine SpecsDrivetrain is something you may not consider when you think about towing capacity, but it’s important. The Ford Escape offers two choices for you:

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD)
  • All-wheel drive (AWD)

FWD is a lightweight system that’s great for improving fuel economy, and it comes standard with the 1.5L EcoBoost® engine. For heavy hauls, however, we recommend equipping your Escape with AWD. It’s available with the 1.5L engine and standard with the 2.0L engine.

The AWD system with the 2020 Escape is a smart system that actively monitors your roadway conditions and several other factors. It then automatically adjusts torque distribution to improve handling and traction control.

With AWD, you’ll be able to keep steady, whether you’re driving through snow and mud or towing 3,500 pounds of weight. The AWD system also comes with Selectable Drive Modes. This allows you to optimize your drive even more by choosing from up to five different drive modes.

Available drive modes include Sport, Slippery, Eco, Deep Snow/Sand, and Normal.

Technology and Towing with the Ford Escape

2020 Ford Escape TechnologyNot only does the Ford Escape have the capability to tow, it also has the technology to allow you to tow safely and conveniently.

For example, a Rear View Camera is available with the Ford Co-Pilot360™ system. This feature turns the available 8-inch touchscreen in the center stack into a live video feed of the area directly behind your vehicle while in reverse. With dynamic gridlines and a clearer view, you’ll be able to line up your hitch and trailer with ease.

When you’re on the go, your trailer may sway a little. With the standard Lane-Keeping System, your Escape will recognize if you’re drifting from your intended lane of travel and gently guide you back between the lines. It’ll also provide vibrational pulses through the steering wheel to remind you to stay alert.
