Healing with Horses at Marley’s Mission Inc.
Marley’s Mission is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide pro bono equine-based therapy to children and families healing from trauma. On this page, you’ll find more information about equine-assisted psychotherapy, Marley’s Mission’s facilities, and how you can contribute to the work of this inspiring organization and its dedicated team.
What Is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)?
EAP is an interactive and immersive form of therapy. Used to support trauma patients along their healing journey, EAP has been shown to assist people dealing with depression, anxiety, dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), genetic syndromes, addiction, and traumatic brain injuries.
EAP is seen by many as a method of experiencing the benefits of therapy in a less intimidating, nonclinical environment. By building confidence, developing self-efficacy, reducing anxiety, and learning to trust safely, EAP is a truly empowering form of therapy.
Campus & Facilities
Marley’s Mission is currently located on a 40-acre campus in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Twelve horses live on the grounds and assist with the EAP program. The grounds contain the following resources and facilities:
- Horse stable
- Indoor heated therapy arenas
- Three large pastures with watering systems
- Administrative building
- Outdoor pavilion
- Treehouse
Dream Team & Treatment Approach
The treatment team at Marley’s Mission consists of a specially trained trauma therapist and an equine specialist, both of whom have been educated in the internationally recognized Equine-Assisted Therapy Model.
There’s no horseback riding as part of the therapeutic services offered by Marley’s Mission. Children work with the horses on the ground, overcoming fears, developing communication skills, practicing acceptance, and connecting with a sense of control.
