Why Should I Get An Oil Change?

An oil change is a critical element in the maintenance of your engine. To keep it running smoothly and prevent future issues, a scheduled change is recommended. With today’s modern engines becoming more advanced than ever, having the right oil in your system is paramount.

Our team is trained to work on all makes and models but specializes in Fords. As such, our technicians follow Ford’s recommendations for when to change your oil. For the model year 2008 and newer, they recommend an oil change every 7,500 miles or six months. For 2007 and older models, every 5,000 miles or six months.

What Are the Signs I Need an Oil Change?

Signs I Need an Oil ChangeThere are few different signs that your engine needs an oil change. The most obvious and easiest tell is that the oil change light will brighten when the internal sensors indicate that the oil is old and close to expiring. When you spy on that, it’s a good idea to check the dipstick to gain a better idea of what’s going on.

Often drivers will forget that oil does an important job of protecting your engine by keeping components from scraping against each other to maintain a smooth operation. When you begin to get closer to that needed oil change, components may not work as efficiently as they should.

Another great way to assess your engine’s oil is by looking at its color. Clean oil is going to be amber-colored and semi-translucent. As you go about your driving business, you’ll inevitably push particles from the engine into the oil, darkening it. It’s recommended to check the color via a dipstick approximately every two months.

Finally, if you begin to notice oily smells inside your vehicle or see smoke coming out from under the hood, they can be signs of issues with your oil. In the latter case, it may signal engine issues that can result from a faulty oil delivery system.

When Should I Get an Oil Change?

A lot of the signs we’ve listed above are great indicators for when you schedule an oil change or even general service on your vehicle. While we listed them as signs you need an oil change, they aren’t meant to be taken lightly. What might start as a simple check oil light could develop into something more problematic and require further maintenance.

Now, while this may appear to be a repeat of the figures listed above, this is focused on makes and models from other manufacturers to give you a broader scope of when to schedule an oil change. If you’re driving an older vehicle that runs on conventional oil, a change is suggested between 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

When it comes to a newer car that runs on synthetic oil, you’ll need to change the oil between 6,000 to 7,500 miles.
