Used Ford Explorer for Sale Near Wilkes-Barre and Scranton
Frequently Asked Questions about the Used Ford Explorer
What changed when Ford redesigned the Explorer for 2020?
A lot. The 2020 redesign moved the Explorer to a rear-wheel-drive-based platform (replacing the previous front-wheel-drive-based architecture), which improved towing, handling balance, and overall driving feel. Engine options changed too: the 2.3L EcoBoost became the standard engine, the 3.0L EcoBoost became available in ST and Platinum trims, and a hybrid powertrain became available. Pre-2020 examples are a different vehicle in important ways; if you are deciding between generations, the 2020+ models drive better and tow more.
What is the towing capacity?
5,000 to 5,600 pounds depending on engine and configuration. The 2.3L EcoBoost models tow up to 5,300 lbs properly equipped. The 3.0L EcoBoost trims (ST, Platinum) can tow up to 5,600 lbs. Older pre-2020 Explorers had lower tow ratings (around 5,000 lbs typical). For most boat and small camper towing in our region, that capacity is sufficient. For larger trailers, step up to a Super Duty truck.
Is the Explorer ST worth the premium?
Depends on what you want. The Explorer ST gets the 3.0L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 (around 400 hp), sport-tuned suspension, more aggressive styling, and a different driving feel from the standard Explorer. It also costs more, runs premium fuel, and gets worse fuel economy. For buyers who want a three-row family SUV with genuinely strong performance, ST delivers. For buyers who just want a practical family hauler, the Limited or Platinum trims with the 2.3L are more sensible.
How usable is the third row for adults?
For shorter trips, fine. For long highway runs, kids only. The 2020+ Explorer's third row is more accommodating than the previous generation thanks to the platform change, but it is still primarily designed for occasional adult use or regular kid use. If you regularly haul three rows of adult passengers, the Expedition or a full-size body-on-frame SUV is the better answer. Cargo space behind the third row is around 18 cubic feet, expanding significantly with the third row folded.
Any years to be cautious about?
The 2020 launch year had some early-production quality issues that Ford addressed through warranty and recall campaigns. Most 2020 Explorers on the road have had the relevant fixes applied. 2021+ examples reflect the resolved issues. Older 2011-2019 examples have well-understood service histories with their own known items (water pump replacement on 3.5L V6 engines is a known service item at higher mileage). We check these as part of our pre-sale inspection.
Three-Row SUV Decisions
Three-row SUV shopping has more variables than most categories. Towing capacity, third-row use frequency, AWD requirements, and trim level all interact.
We help families from across Northeast PA work through these trade-offs every week.

The Explorer as a Three-Row Family Hauler
The Ford Explorer has been a benchmark three-row SUV for decades, and the used market reflects that reach. Inventory typically spans multiple generations and a wide range of trim levels, which gives buyers options across the budget spectrum. The 2020 redesign reset the platform, so used buyers should think about pre-2020 vs 2020+ as effectively different vehicles in the same nameplate.
For Tunkhannock-area families, the Explorer hits a useful spot. Three rows of seating means flex capacity for carpools, grandparents in town, and the standard family-of-four-plus configurations. AWD is broadly available, towing capacity covers most boats and small campers, and ground clearance handles unpaved access roads to lake houses and hunting cabins without strain. The Expedition is the next size up for buyers who need genuine adult third-row use; the Edge is the two-row sibling for buyers who do not need a third row.
- Three rows, 6 to 7 passenger seating depending on configuration
- 5,000-5,600 lb towing capacity properly equipped
- AWD widely available across trims
- 2020 redesign created two distinct generations on the used market
If you want similar capability in a body-on-frame package with stronger off-road credentials, the Expedition is one step up. If you want serious off-road ability rather than family practicality, the Bronco is the off-road-focused alternative.
Trim Landscape Across the Lineup
Recent Explorer trims run Base, XLT, Limited, Platinum, ST, King Ranch, and Timberline. Base and XLT are the value tiers with cloth seats and fewer comfort features. Limited adds leather and most of the comfort and tech that family buyers want; this is the value sweet spot for many buyers. Platinum is the luxury-focused trim with premium materials throughout. ST is the performance variant with the 3.0L V6.
King Ranch (introduced as an Explorer trim in recent years) takes the F-150 King Ranch's western leather treatment into the Explorer cabin. Timberline (also recent) is the off-road-oriented trim with raised suspension, all-terrain tires, and skid plates. Each trim targets a different buyer; understanding what each one actually does helps narrow used inventory shopping.
- Base/XLT: value-focused with cloth interiors
- Limited: comfort and tech sweet spot
- Platinum: luxury-focused with premium materials
- ST: 3.0L V6, sport-tuned, performance-oriented
- Timberline: off-road-focused with raised suspension
For most Wyoming County family buyers, Limited AWD is the trim that hits the right balance of equipment and value. For buyers who want serious capability for hunting trips and unpaved access, Timberline is worth a serious look.
Real Three-Row Practicality in Northeast PA
The Explorer handles Northeast PA driving conditions cleanly. Highway runs to Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, or further into the Lehigh Valley are comfortable. Local rural roads in the Endless Mountains are no challenge for AWD examples. Towing a small camper to Lake Wallenpaupack or a boat to Harvey's Lake is straightforward with the 5,000+ pound rating. Hauling kids and gear simultaneously works in the configurations with captain's chairs in the second row (available on higher trims).
For winter driving specifically, AWD makes a real difference and is widely available across trims. Ground clearance is adequate for typical winter conditions but not aggressive; the Timberline trim with its raised suspension is the option for buyers who regularly drive in deeper snow or on unmaintained back roads. Fuel economy on the 2.3L EcoBoost lands in the low 20s combined with AWD, which is competitive for the segment but not best-in-class.
- Composed at I-81 highway speeds
- AWD systems handle most PA winter conditions
- Towing capacity covers most weekend recreation needs
- Captain's chair second row available on higher trims
For families that previously had a smaller crossover and are stepping up because of growing kids or a need for towing, the Explorer is the typical move. For families that need genuine adult third-row use regularly, the Expedition is the truer answer despite the higher price.
Inspection and Buying at Tunkhannock Ford
Every used Explorer at Tunkhannock Ford goes through a multi-point inspection in our service bays before listing. We check engine performance across the various engine options, transmission behavior on the 10-speed automatic (newer) and 6-speed automatic (older), AWD system function, brakes (these wear faster with regular towing), suspension, and the panoramic sunroof drains on equipped vehicles.
For the 2020+ generation specifically, we verify that any open recall campaigns have been completed and that the early-production quality items have been addressed. For older generations, we check the 3.5L V6 water pump and timing chain components at higher mileage. Vehicle history reports come standard, and Ford CPO Explorers are available with extended warranty coverage on top of the standard remaining factory warranty.
- Multi-point mechanical and cosmetic inspection
- Recall campaign verification on 2020+ examples
- Engine-specific service items checked (water pump, timing components)
- Ford CPO option for extended warranty coverage
